Prefolds are pieces of flat cotton (or sometimes hemp) that have been sewn together in such a way that creates more layers in the middle, where more absorbency is needed. So instead of having to fold the fabric to get this effect, these are "pre folded" for you.
These are one of the most basic types of diapers (flats being THE most basic...we will get to those next). They are the cost efficient and work well. They may take a little getting used to, but they are still very popular and also make great burp cloths. Also, these are a great choice for newborns because of their cost efficiency being that newborn babies go through so many diapers per day. Prefolds need a diaper cover to keep wetness in.
Flats are like what prefolds start out as. Just a flat piece of absorbent fabric, usually sewn (or "serged") around the edges to keep it from fraying. They can be folded in many different ways to fit the individual needs of each baby. Flats also need a diaper cover to keep wetness in.
All-in-Ones
All-in-Ones (or AIOs) are pretty much the opposite of prefolds as far as cloth diapering systems go. They are the whole kit and caboodle in one convenient package. AIOs have the absorbent inner and the waterproof outer, plus handy fasteners like snaps or hook-and-loop (like Velcro). These are the most similar to disposables in how they are used. They are also the least cost effective diapering system. Convenience has its price! But even using AIOs it is still far less expensive than using disposable diapers.
Why does my AIO have two pieces? Well, AIOs can also come in more than one part but the pieces usually snap or fit together to make one. The reason for this is because when the pieces can be separated, they dry much faster in the dryer (or on the line if that's how you do it). AIOs that are "true all-in-ones" can take a bit longer to dry simply because there are more layers.
Pocket Diapers
Pocket diapers are made of two layers, an outer waterproof layer and an inner breathable layer. At the back end of the diaper there is an opening in which you can place absorbent inserts. What is so great about pocket diapers is that you can put as many or as few inserts in the pocket depending on the needs of your child. Or you can customize the diaper for different times of the day - for example, nighttime would require more absorbency so you can put in an additional insert to keep your child dry.
Another big advantage of pocket diapers is that they dry fast. Inserts usually have to be purchased separately, or you can also use prefolds as the inserts. This is still an economical method of diapering, yet is very easy to use. Even for dads and other care providers!
Fitted Diapers
Fitted cloth diapers feature elastic around the legs and either snap or hook-and-loop closures for a snug and comfortable fit, and superb protection from leaks and "blowouts". Fitted diapers DO require a diaper cover.
Diaper Covers
Diaper covers are the waterproof outer layer that prevents leaks and "blowouts". Diaper covers come in many different fabrics (like fleece, PUL and wool) and have elastic around the legs and snap or hook-and-loop closure.
Cloth Training Pants
Cloth Training Pants are like cloth diapers, however they typically have less absorbency and are more like regular underwear.
Doublers and Liners
Doublers are extra layers of absorbent material that you can lay inside your cloth diapers if your baby needs additional absorbency. Diaper liners add a layer against baby's skin to keep her feeling dry.
Pocket Diaper Inserts
These are the absorbent layers that are placed inside pocket diapers.
Wet Bags
Wet bags are waterproof cloth bags to store your soiled cloth diapers in while you are out and about. They can be thrown in the wash along with your diapers.
Cloth Wipe
Soft baby wipes that can be washed and re-used. It's easier to use cloth wipes with cloth diapers because they can all be thrown in the wash or diaper pail at once rather than putting the wipes in one place and the diaper in another.
